Baardskeerdersbos Valley (B’bos)
Nestled in the heart of the Overberg, the Baardskeerdersbos Valley is one of the region’s most undisturbed and quietly enchanting areas. The village’s name originates from small spider-like creatures called “Baardscheerders” or “Beard Shavers.” According to local legend, these creatures would trim the hair and beards of those sleeping on the ground, using it to line their burrows. They were among the first animals encountered by settlers around 1660.
That said, I have yet to see one of these so-called “camel spiders” since moving here. Today, the area is more fondly known as “B’bos.”
B’bos lies along a scenic drive approximately 25 km from Gansbaai, en route to the southernmost point of the African continent, Cape Agulhas. The journey itself is a delight, meandering past streams and through rolling hills covered in fynbos. Along the way, you’ll pass traditional cattle farms and horse-steads, bright green vineyards, and colourful flower farms that characterise the valley.
The village has remained largely rural and undisturbed. Over the past 10–15 years, it has become home to relocating artists, off-grid downshifters, and conscious nature lovers. More recently, it has been discovered as a serene getaway, particularly for residents of Cape Town seeking space, silence, and connection with nature.
SURYA is located on the outskirts of this quaint village, approximately 2 km as the crow flies. We enjoy a close connection with the local community of artists, farmers, and nature lovers, as well as breathtaking, uninterrupted views across the valley. The current population is estimated at just over 200 people, nearly 100 horses, and countless cows and sheep, reflecting the deeply rural character of the area.
B’bos is also home to several pristine and rare fynbos habitats that form part of the original Cape Floral Kingdom. This makes it especially appealing to hikers, cyclists, horse riders, bird watchers, and anyone who enjoys slow, nature-based exploration.

Horse Experiences
Horse lovers — and children who would like to learn to ride — are welcome to speak to Nina @ SURYA about availability for horse experiences. Nina offers:

For more advanced riders, scenic beach outrides are available with Horse Riding Gansbaai. Daily rides take you from the stables to Uilenkraalsmond, where you cross the river and enjoy expansive beach riding.

Beaches & the Ocean
Pearly Beach, just a 15-minute drive from SURYA, offers long, unspoilt stretches of white sand that are ideal for swimming, beach walks, cycling, and quiet time by the sea. The beach feels spacious and wild, even during holiday periods, and is perfect for slow days, picnics, and sunset walks.
Struisbaai, one of the region’s most loved coastal villages, is just under an hour’s drive and well worth a visit for a beach day or outing. Known for its pristine white sandy beaches and vibrant, generations-old fishing community, Struisbaai boasts a sheltered bay with often beautifully turquoise water. It is ideal for swimming, kayaking, kite surfing, and relaxed ocean time, especially for families.
For guests interested in whale watching, we recommend visiting Hermanus, which is internationally known for land-based whale viewing. From July to November, Southern Right whales can often be seen from the cliffs and shoreline, sometimes just metres from the coast.

Advanced mountain bikers may enjoy the trails at Lomond, or the Sandberg Fynbos Reserve, where guided tours showcase fynbos species unique to this area (booking essential).
At Lomond, the Klipspringer MTB trails consist of four routes starting and finishing at the estate. Day permits are available from the tasting room.
Art & Craft
B’bos Art Gallery & Café
A much-loved creative hub in the heart of Baardskeerdersbos, run by local artists Eva Gilliam and Claire Gunn. The gallery showcases a rotating selection of local art — refined, playful, and sometimes delightfully unpolished — alongside excellent barista coffee, homemade cakes, and savoury treats.
It’s also a handy stop for a few quality essentials such as fresh eggs, butter, milk, and olive oil, perfect for last-minute kitchen needs. Pop-up events and exhibitions take place throughout the year.

Local artists also host the Baardskeerdersbos Art Route twice a year — a highly recommended experience and a beautiful way to explore the creative life of the valley.
For enthusiastic bakers, local artist and artisan bread maker Niel Jonker offers once-a-month sourdough bread-making workshops. Group bookings and alternative dates can be arranged.
Forest Walks
Tree and forest lovers are encouraged to visit Platbos, Africa’s southernmost forest. This ancient indigenous forest lies on the route between B’bos and Grootbos and features an easy, gently sloping trail suitable for all ages. The walk takes 1–2.5 hours and includes specimen trees estimated to be over 1,000 years old.

GANSBAAI & FURTHER AFIELD
Gansbaai, approximately 25 km away, is the nearest larger town and offers a variety of exceptional nature-based experiences. Make it a day outing and visit, for example:
